Soldier of Fortune II: Double Helix is the sequel to Raven Software's original Soldier of Fortune and was released in 2002. The game uses the Quake III: Team Arena engine which allowed for more realistic graphics and gameplay than its predecessor. Working with John Mullins, a consultant from the original game, Raven Software aimed to create a more realistic shooter that drew inspiration from tactical shooters like Operation Flashpoint: Cold War Crisis and Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six rather than Quake.

The game features an arsenal of weapons based on real-world firearms such as M4 carbines, Desert Eagles, MP5s and even sniper rifles for those long-range shots. There are also some unique weapons like portable laser tripwires or airburst grenades which can be used by players to set up traps or take out large groups of enemies at once.
