Firewatch is a video game set in 1989, where the player takes on the role of Henry, a man who has recently taken up the job of fire lookout in Wyoming. In this scorching hot summer season, Henry must patrol and look for smoke to keep the wilderness safe. His supervisor Delilah can be contacted over a small handheld radio at any time and provides assistance throughout his journey. As soon as something strange draws him out from his lookout tower into the forest, he will explore an unknown environment while facing questions and making choices that can either build or destroy his only meaningful relationship with Delilah. Firewatch features stunningly beautiful wilderness environments that expand as you explore them, tailor-made stories based on your choices which shape its narrative and builds relationships and an edge-of-your-seat mystery full of secrets waiting to be discovered around every hill. The game is best suited for adult gamers due to its mature conversations about adult topics.

Firewatch: An Exploration into the Unknown

Firewatch is an award-winning single-player first-person video game developed by Campo Santo and published by Panic in 2016. As its players, you are cast as Henry, a man seeking respite from his complicated life who takes up a summer job as a fire lookout in Wyoming’s wilderness. While it may have started off simple enough – keeping watch over the woods and making sure nothing gets out of hand – your journey quickly changes when mysterious occurrences start to arise. Soon, you find yourself questioning more than just what is happening around you; Who or what could be causing these events?

The only human connection Henry has during his quest for answers comes through his handheld radio. With this device he can speak with Delilah, his supervisor at the park ranger station who shares similar experiences with him in her own way. Together they must unravel the truth behind their shared predicament while avoiding those that wish to do them harm along the way.

At its core Firewatch is about two people trying to make sense of an unknown situation and learning about each other along the way. It shines brightest when it focuses on building strong relationships between characters and challenging our expectations of how we interact with one another given certain conditions – something that many games fail to deliver on but which Firewatch does so wonderfully well.
