In the Vanishing of Ethan Carter, the player takes on the role of Paul Prospero, a supernatural detective who receives a letter from young Ethan Carter. Upon arriving at Red Creek Valley, Prospero discovers that not only is Ethan missing but there has been a murder as well. As he investigates further, it becomes clear that this could be just one in a series of murders and disappearances in Red Creek Valley.

Players must use both their standard investigative skills and supernatural abilities to uncover what happened to Ethan and bring him home safely.
