Sniper Elite is a third-person action strategy game with an emphasis on the art of sniping. Players take on the role of an American agent working for the OSS, assigned to prevent Russian troops from obtaining Germany's nuclear research at the end of World War II. As an elite sniper, players are encouraged to use stealth tactics as opposed to run-and-gun playstyles.

The single-player campaign consists of 28 missions set in and around Berlin. To succeed in Sniper Elite, players must learn how to use their environment effectively; wind and background noise can greatly affect the accuracy of shots so scouting out good positions beforehand is essential. When a shot is performed particularly well, players are rewarded with a 'bullet cam' which shows them what happens when their bullet reaches its destination in slow motion - providing great satisfaction!

Sniper Elite also has competitive multiplayer modes where up to 16 people can compete against each other or team up against AI enemies.
