Pyre is an action-packed party-based RPG/visual novel game hybrid developed by Supergiant Games. Set in a lawless wasteland called the Downside, players take on the role of the Reader, who has been sent into exile and must lead their ever-growing group of misfits to various locations throughout the world where they will compete in Rites. These Rites are competitive challenges between two opposing teams that determine which team can gain freedom from their crimes and be absolved of them.

The gameplay consists mostly of competing in these Rites against other parties. The goal is to carry a burning pyre ball across your opponent's territory while defending it from attack at all times. If you successfully make it across without being stopped or dropped off, then you win the challenge! Players also have access to different characters with special abilities that can help them strategically outplay their opponents during these matches. Aside from this core mechanic, Pyre features plenty more content for players to explore as well such as character customization options, side quests, and even unique dialogue choices that influence how conversations play out with NPCs encountered along your journey through this strange land known as The Downside.

Earning victory in each Rite also rewards players with experience points used to level up characters and upgrade equipment like magical artifacts which grant additional bonuses during battles.
