Drakengard 2 is a role-playing action game set 18 years after the events of the original title. The player takes on the role of Nowe, a young warrior chosen to ride a blue dragon and protect the world against chaos in order to maintain peace. As part of his duty, Nowe joins a legion that guards a red dragon which helps him fulfill his destiny as savior. Drakengard 2 is the direct sequel to the critically acclaimed original Drakengard, and it certainly does not disappoint. The story revolves around Nowe, a boy raised by a dragon named Legna who fights against an oppressive faction of knights. Along his journey he meets characters from the previous game and becomes entangled in the fate of the world.

The beloved hack-and-slash gameplay from Drakengard returns with some new additions. Players can now battle on foot or take to the skies for aerial combat stages. RPG elements are also present, allowing players to level up their character as they progress through this thrilling adventure. Returning producers, writers and character designers made sure that Drakengard 2 would remain faithful to its predecessor while still being more accessible to mainstream audiences thanks to its lighthearted aesthetic and storytelling style.

Despite achieving positive reviews in Japan upon its 2005 release, Western critics were a little less kind towards Drakengard 2 due largely to its graphics which were seen as dated at best by modern standards; however many felt that these flaws could be overlooked due to how strong of an experience it was otherwise — especially when it came down its amazing narrative depth and engaging gameplay mechanics. Even though sales weren’t what Square Enix had hoped for (the game sold 206000 copies by 2017), those who did play have surely been taken away on one of gaming’s most memorable journeys yet!
