Assassin's Creed II is an action-adventure game set during the Italian Renaissance. Players take on the role of Ezio Auditore da Firenze, a master assassin out to uncover a conspiracy and avenge his family. The game offers players an open world experience with mission structure that allows them to explore the rooftops and canals of historic Venice as well as other cities in Italy.

Players are given many options for combat, assassination and escape including new weapons, settings and gameplay elements. The fighting system has been improved from the first Assassin’s Creed allowing more realistic hand-to-hand combat along with tactical use of weapons like hidden blades, crossbows, throwing knives and swords. There are also multiple ways to assassinate targets such as stealth kills or using environmental traps like haystacks or bales of wool to hide bodies.

The story follows Ezio through his life journey into adulthood where he must learn how to be an assassin while uncovering secrets about his heritage and discovering who is behind the powerful conspiracy against him. Alongside this main plot there are numerous side missions which involve helping citizens in distress or hunting down enemies across various locations around Italy such as Florence, Tuscany and Forli'. As you progress further into the game more advanced skills become available such as being able to blend in crowds by wearing disguises or scaling buildings quickly with grappling hooks for faster travel between destinations.
