The goal of Tharsis is to reach the end of each mission alive - no easy task as your ship will suffer damage during each round played due to random events that can only be countered by using resources like Food or Oxygen wisely. You'll also need to manage your crew's health and morale levels carefully as they fend off alien creatures who want nothing more than their deaths! Along the way there are various challenges including repairing damaged equipment, launching satellites into orbit around Mars to gain access to new technology, upgrading modules on board your ship or researching ancient artifacts found on the planet’s surface.

The core gameplay mechanics revolve around managing seven dice which represent different aspects of survival such as nutrition consumption or oxygen use; these dice are rolled at every turn in order to determine how successful certain actions will be based on luck alone.
