The game starts off with Emma exploring locations from her overhead view while using her lantern to cast shadows on which Fenton can traverse. As the two characters progress throughout their journey, they will alternate between viewpoints as needed in order to access certain switches or objects that may be out of sight otherwise. For example, a switch could only be activated by throwing Fenton's shadow onto it from high above – something that would not be possible without alternating between character perspectives.
