The core gameplay revolves around the player building up a colony on an uncharted planet by establishing various facilities for mining resources, manufacturing items, housing colonists and defending against alien attacks. Colonists each come with different personalities and skills which must be managed as they carry out tasks such as gathering resources, constructing buildings or manning defenses. Managing these colonists is key to success - keep them happy by providing entertainment options like bars, gyms or casinos; make sure their needs are met by making sure there’s enough food available; manage research projects for new technology upgrades; defend your base from enemy forces with defensive structures such as turrets and walls. All these elements combine into an engrossing experience where you must balance both long-term strategic planning with short-term resource management if you want your colony to succeed.

The visuals of Space Colony: Steam Edition have been updated significantly since its original release over fifteen years ago.
