Savage: The Battle for Newerth is a unique real-time strategy/first-person shooter hybrid developed by S2 Games and released in September 2003. Although the game was criticized on its initial release for being unpolished, lacking basic features, and not having any tutorials, it has since been widely praised for its innovative gameplay. It eventually became freeware 3 years later when the game was officially abandoned and made open source.

Since then it's been improved continuously by the Savage community over the past 16 years using patches that have brought new content and fixed bugs from 2004 to 2005 with EX2 team; from 2005 to 2007 with SEP/SFE team; and since 2008 with Savage XR team releasing patch 2.0e in January 2004 as well as other updates such as balance tweaks and bug fixes. These improvements have helped make Savage: The Battle for Newerth a critically acclaimed title, winning awards like Seumas McNally Grand Prize at Independent Games Festival 2004 along with Technical Excellence Award and Audience Award or Editor\'s Choice 8.7 - Great award by IGN website in 2006 among others.
