The story of Root Letter takes place in Matsue City, Shimane Prefecture Japan. It revolves around the disappearance of Aya Fumino fifteen years prior to the start of the game. Players take on the role of Max (Aya’s pen pal) as he attempts to uncover what happened to Aya fifteen years ago by talking to people associated with her at that time and examining evidence related to her case.
