Mafia III is an action-adventure video game set in the fictional city of New Bordeaux, Louisiana. Released in 2016, it tells the story of Lincoln Clay, a Vietnam veteran who returns to his hometown after serving in the war. When he discovers that his family has been betrayed and killed by local mobsters, he sets out on a mission of revenge – using any means necessary.

The game begins with Lincoln’s return home from Vietnam where he finds that much has changed since his departure: crime syndicates have taken control of New Bordeaux and violence runs rampant throughout its streets. As Lincoln begins to investigate what happened to his family, he quickly learns that there are far more powerful forces at play than just one gangster or another. In order to survive and exact justice for those he loves, Lincoln must build a new family – immune from external influence – as well as use all available resources (both legal and illegal) at his disposal.

As players progress through Mafia III’s narrative they will see how deeply entwined loyalty and sacrifice can be when it comes to protecting your own “family” – no matter if this group consists of criminals or not - which is represented perfectly by Mafia III's tagline "It's 1968 and the rules have changed". With gameplay features such as strategic planning before engaging into gunfights or choosing between different paths for each missions' outcomes allow players to fully immerse themselves into their chosen role within this underworld power struggle while simultaneously being reminded about how closely linked love and death can be when fighting for something you believe in with every fiber of your being: "Family isn't who you're born with; it's who you die for."
