In Crystar, players take on the role of Rei as she battles through Purgatory to save her sister. Along the way, she is joined by four other playable characters with whom she can switch freely between. As players progress through the game's story and uncover each character's pasts, they will learn about their individual sorrows and come to understand why Rei's mantra "for when I weep, then I am strong" holds true for them all. The game combines elements from action RPGs with a unique narrative structure that allows players to explore their own emotions while fighting against monsters in Purgatory.

Crystar is a unique action role-playing game developed by Gemdrops and published by Spike Chunsoft. In this game the player controls Rei Hatada, a beautiful girl who has made a deal with the devil of limbo in order to revive her dead younger sister Mirai. As Rei embarks on her journey through limbo she must fight against various souls that drift about the realm in order to progress the story.

The combat system in Crystar revolves around “Danmatsuma Thoughts” which appear when specific enemies are defeated. These thoughts can be purified with crying and will help develop Rei mentally as well as give her access to weapons called “Shisou” or Mental Armor. The Mental Armor comes in many different forms such as swords, shields, spears etc., each possessing its own special abilities that can be used during battle. Additionally, while exploring limbo you may encounter friendly characters who can provide support for Rei both physically and emotionally throughout your journey together.

In addition to its thrilling action-filled gameplay Crystar features gorgeous visuals accompanied by an emotional soundtrack composed by Kenichiro Saigo & Suguru Matsutani (known from their work on games like NieR: Automata).
