Players take on the role of a daimyo, or leader, of one of Japan's contemporary clans in an attempt to conquer the nation and become supreme Shogun.

The game consists of two parts – a 2D campaign map mode and 3D real time battles. In the Risk-style turn based campaign map mode, players must manage their armies by recruiting troops, moving them around the landscape, conducting diplomacy with other clans, engaging in trade and espionage as well as sabotage and assassinations. All these elements are important for success but ultimately serve to provide context for what makes up the main part of Shogun: Total War - its 3D real time battles which occur whenever two opposing forces meet each other in enemy territory or on the campaign map itself.
