All about game NBA Jam
The release of NBA Jam in 1993 was a revolutionary moment for sports video games. Developed and published by Midway, it is widely considered to be the first entry in the NBA Jam series and has gone on to become one of the most iconic and popular basketball arcade games ever created.
Mark Turmell, the game's main designer and programmer, took inspiration from Midway's earlier titles such as Arch Rivals (1989), High Impact (1990) and Super High Impact (1991). These titles served as a foundation for NBA Jam's gameplay which featured two-on-two matches pitting players against each other with an emphasis on fast paced action rather than realism. This new approach quickly caught on with gamers who appreciated its over-the-top style of play that allowed them to perform incredible dunks or block shots with ease.
NBA Jam became an instant hit upon its release earning more than $1 billion in quarters within arcades across America making it one of the highest grossing arcade games of all time according to reports from Amusement & Music Operators Association early 1994. Its success spawned a whole genre of sports video games based around exaggerated realism such as NFL Blitz or 2 On 2 Open Ice Challenge hockey game both also developed by Midway.
To this day, we can still see echoes of NBA Jams influence throughout modern day sports gaming franchises thanks largely to its innovative design that focused heavily on fun rather than accuracy when it comes to replicating real life basketball matches – something which continues to draw people into playing these types of video games even today almost 30 years after its initial release!
