Metro 2033 is a post apocalyptic video game set in the shattered subway of Moscow. In 2013, an apocalyptic event wiped out almost all humanity and turned the earth's surface into a poisonous wasteland. A few survivors took refuge underground and human civilization entered a new Dark Age by 2033. The protagonist Artyom, born before the fire but raised Underground, embarks on a mission to warn mankind of an impending threat. He must traverse from forgotten catacombs beneath the subway to desolate wastelands above where his actions will determine mankind's fate. Along his journey he must also contend with mutant horrors that await outside as well as other Metro Station-Cities struggling for survival amongst each other.

Metro 2033, developed by 4A Games and based on the Russian novel of the same name by Dmitry Glukhovsky, is a first-person shooter with survival horror elements that takes place in post-apocalyptic Moscow. Players take control of Artyom, who must explore the Metro system to find survivors and resources while battling mutated monsters and hostile humans.

The majority of the game takes place underground in a series of interconnected tunnels known as “the Metro” – an extensive network built before nuclear war broke out above ground. As Artyom explores this dangerous subterranean world he will come across both friendly and hostile factions vying for control over limited resources, including food, water and ammunition. While exploring these areas players can also collect items such as weapons or armor which can be used to upgrade their equipment throughout the course of their journey.

Although most of the game focuses on combat within various metro stations there are moments when Artyom is required to venture outside into what remains of post-apocalyptic Moscow - where monstrous mutants roam amongst the snow covered ruins. These sections feature several on-rails sequences with set pieces designed to challenge players both tactically and strategically; from defending locations against waves upon waves of enemies to sneakily evading detection through environments filled with hazards that could potentially kill you if you make one wrong move.
