Hakuoki: Memories of the Shinsengumi is a video game set in Japan during a time of conflict between shogunate and imperial forces. Hakuoki: Memories of the Shinsengumi is a text-heavy otome visual novel game with a Japanese historical theme. The story follows Chizuru, a young woman who is searching for her missing father in Kyoto during the turbulent Bakumatsu period. She soon discovers that she must work with members of the notorious Shinsengumi to find him, and along the way uncovers secrets about herself and her family’s history.

Players are presented with choices throughout their playthrough, allowing them to shape their relationship with each character as well as determine how events unfold in Hakuoki's narrative.
