In Geist, players take on the role of a spectral operative searching for their physical body, which is being kept alive somewhere in an expansive complex. As they explore and collect the energies of indigenous spirits, they must use them to build up their power in order to unravel the mystery. Throughout their journey, players can possess a variety of creatures from human soldiers to dogs and use special abilities such as travelling through cracks, interfering with electronics and moving objects. Along the way they will need to be careful as some spirits are friendly while others are not; enemies must be defeated using an array of weapons, equipment and skills.

The game follows protagonist John Raimi, who after being subjected to a ghastly experiment that rips his spirit from his physical body, must take possession of humans, animals and objects in order to explore the shadowy halls of the Volks Corporation.
Players must use their power of possession to manipulate their environment and solve puzzles as they attempt to unravel the mystery behind their condition. Players can possess up to eight different types of characters at one time which allows for strategic combat scenarios as well as providing an interesting twist on puzzle solving techniques. Possessing multiple characters simultaneously also opens up possibilities such as finding hidden pathways or using certain character’s abilities in tandem with others.
The story revolves around uncovering the dark secrets behind the Volks Corporation while battling enemy forces along the way. Throughout these battles players will have access to a variety of weapons including pistols, shotguns and machine guns but also supernatural powers like possessing enemies or unleashing powerful spectral attacks that can incapacitate opponents from afar.
