Disgaea: Afternoon of Darkness is a tactical role-playing game developed by Nippon Ichi Software and published in Japan by Sony Computer Entertainment, released for the PlayStation Portable (PSP) in 2006. Disgaea is set in a fantasy world called the Netherworld, which is ruled by an evil overlord named Laharl. The player takes control of Laharl as he attempts to retake his rightful place as ruler of the Netherworld.

Gameplay revolves around turn-based battles on maps divided into grids containing both allies and enemies. Players can control what their characters do during battle; they can attack or use special abilities such as spells or items to help defeat their opponents. Humanoid characters have the unique ability to lift and throw other units across the map; this allows them to move further distances or force enemies away from certain locations. This also gives players the opportunity to capture enemies by throwing them into base panels—enemies that are captured become allies and can be used on subsequent maps. However, success with capturing depends on various factors such as enemy type, character stats, etc.. Failure results in all characters inside being killed off while leaving enemies unscathed.
