In Dear Esther: Landmark Edition, players take control of an unnamed protagonist who explores a remote island off the coast of Great Britain. As they explore their surroundings, fragments of story are revealed to them through narration and environmental clues; gradually piecing together the mysterious events that have taken place on the island. With no traditional objectives or puzzles to complete, Dear Esther focuses instead on atmosphere and narrative; creating an immersive experience for its players.

The remastered version offers improved graphics with high resolution textures as well as more detailed environments than ever before.
