Age of Empires: The Age of Kings is a turn-based strategy game where players move through the Dark Ages and Middle Ages with the goal of dominating the world. Players can choose from five different civilizations (Britons, Franks, Mongols, Saracens, or Japanese) and control 'hero' units such as Richard the Lionheart and Genghis Khan to affect battles on the field. In addition to leading 45 types of battle units such as bowmen and monks into combat, players are able to construct buildings that will help them learn new skills and create resources for their civilizations. With over 50 technologies available for research - including chemistry, ballistics, siege craft and spying - players can advance their civilization into a new age. Other features include a Combat Advisor offering advice on certain strategies in campaigns; up to four wireless multi-player scenarios; Empire Points used to unlock maps & units; etc.
